In spring-fall 2009, I will travel across the U.S. to profile examples and advocates of community-based sustainability through audio and photographic imagery. Some of the issues and topics I expect to encounter include: climate change & natural disaster, agriculture & food systems, renewable energy & conservation, environmental restoration & stewardship, America’s public lands, regional cultural identities & traditions, changing demographics, decline of the middle class, labor & immigration, arts & environment, and local, community-based economies.

The trip will be powered exclusively by carbon-neutral renewable resources – primarily travel by pedal, paddle, and foot. I will begin in Oregon at the mouth of the Columbia River and travel east to Washington, D.C. and the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

Much of the route will retrace the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

I will follow some of the routes in the Adventure Cycling Route Network.

Here’s a rough sketch of the route I intend to travel.
